Theme Thursday: Dad

Lucy and my dad at Game 7 of the Rangers vs. Cardinals World Series 2011.  (Cardinals won, of course.)  Today is Lucy's fourteenth birthday.  Happy Birthday Lucy!

My dad loves music.  Loves to sing.  Loves to play the guitar.  Loves to surprise people with musical instruments as gifts.  When I was a child, he was asked to join the parish choir.  He sings that well, and as you can see, he sings with great gusto.  When he's not singing, he's often whistling.  Or reading science fiction.  This photo was taken three years ago today, and they are singing Happy Birthday to Lucy.

Growing up my dad never let us chew gum in his car.  Once, maybe 30 years ago or more,  he took my sister and I to the mall and all three of us got ice cream cones.  Walking back to his car, he was lecturing us about not getting ice cream on the seats, when suddenly the ice cream fell off of his cone onto the asphalt!  Katie and I laughed and laughed!

I'm pretty sure my kids chew gum in his car all the time.

My dad also loves "messing around with boats."  He owned a bass fishing boat when I was a child.  But he sold it to help pay for my Catholic education.  He might disagree and say he sold it to pay off credit card debts, but bills are bills.  We (the eleven of us) made 'em, he paid 'em.

You might remember that my dad is that guy whose suing the government about the HHS mandate and how it affects private business owners.  That's my dad.

I'm so proud of him.

Linking up with Cari and Co.

***Added note:  Just got a text from my brother that all my dad wants for Father's Day is prayers and holy hours for my mom and a successful outcome to her surgery tomorrow.  I know all of you wouldn't mind giving my dad a little Father's Day love too.  Right?

  1. Wow, your Dad is FUN!! I love how you describe him and how big your family is. My Dad is also always singing or whistling, it's just like he's always in a good mood, which is how I picture yours as well :)

  2. Aren't dads funny when they become grandfathers? My FIL never allowed his kids to have balloons in the car when they were little. He swore it was a dangerous distraction to the driver, and so they couldn't ever have them on car trips.

Now? He's the one asking the waitress to bring extra balloons for his grandbabies at restaurants and doesn't say a word when they drift forward and bonk him on the head.

    1. I despise balloons in the car. They always end up stuck to my hair! And the screechy creaky noise when they rub together is like nails on a chalkboard!

  5. I love that picture of him toppling into the water! What an adventurous man. And go, dad, to be suing the government. It's great to see someone standing up for what they believe in. Prayers for your mom!
